WTO Postpones Overturn of Biotech Ban

The European Union is given extension to comply with ruling.

Trade sources confirmed that the World Trade Organization is giving the European Union until Jan. 11 to reverse a ban on biotech products. The EU initially was given until Nov. 21 to comply with a WTO panel decision that banning such goods violates global trade rules, noting restrictions imposed by Germany, Austria, Belgium, France, Italy and Luxembourg. The WTO first ruled September 2006 that the ban breaks global trade rules, following complaints from the United States, Canada and Argentina.
