Wisconsin Holstein Youth Excel at State Convention

Wendorf, Lippert win top honors.

More than 500 members, parents, volunteers and industry representatives attended the 2007 Wisconsin Junior Holstein Convention held Jan. 5-7 at the Holiday Inn in Fond du Lac. The event was hosted by the Dodge County Junior Holstein Association.

Throughout the convention, junior members were encouraged to participate in numerous contests, including dairy quiz bowl, dairy jeopardy, photography, speaking and arts and crafts. The largest competition of the weekend was dairy quiz bowl in which 40 junior and 22 senior teams competed. More than 50 volunteers helped coordinate some 200 dairy bowl matches, dairy jeopardy and speaking contests.

Fond du Lac County placed first in the junior competition beating out Dane County in the finals to remain undefeated. Members of the Fond du Lac County team are Ryan O'Leary, captain, Nicholas Schuster, Matthew O'Leary and Ben Julka. Dane County team members are Abbey Wethel, captain, Macy Sarbacker, Derek Field and Mackenzie Sarbacker.

Twenty-two teams competed in the senior dairy bowl competition. Vernon County beat Fond du Lac County in the final round to remain undefeated. Members of the Vernon County team are Chrissy Wendorf, captain, Heather Petersheim, Brian Wendorf and Ashley Peterson. Fond du Lac County team members are JR Boyke, captain, Kenny Ryan, Krieg Tidemann and Ashley Julka.

The Fond du Lac County junior team and Vernon County senior team will compete with dairy bowl teams from across the country at the National Holstein Convention June 23-26 in Knoxville, Tenn.
Holstein Girl and Boy
The highlight of the convention was the naming of the 2007 Wisconsin Outstanding Holstein Girl and Boy. Chrissy Wendorf of Vernon County is the Outstanding Holstein Girl. Chrissy is the 20-year-old daughter of Kent and Anna Wendorf. She grew up on a 40-cow registered Holstein farm outside of Viroqua. Chrissy is finishing her two-year term on the Junior Activities Committee (JAC) which she served as chairman. She is a junior at University of Wisconsin-Madison majoring in dairy science and ag journalism with an international emphasis.

Paul Lippert, 18, of Wood County is the Outstanding Holstein Boy. He is the son of Matthew and Martha Lippert of Pittsville. Paul is a freshman at UW-Marshfield/Wood County and works on his family's farm, Grass Ridge Farm LLC, a 400-cow dairy.
Chrissy Wendorf, Paul Lippert, Linda Behling of Dodge County, and Annie Dorshorst of Wood County were chosen to represent Wisconsin as Distinguished Junior Members at the National Convention in Knoxville, Tenn. The Distinguished Younger Member national delegates are Jacob Brey of Door County, Kelly Lee of Jefferson County, Ryan O'Leary of Fond du Lac County, and Abbey Wethal of Dane County.
New JACs
Four new Junior Activities Committee members were selected. The JAC committee is responsible for coordinating all junior events within the Wisconsin Holstein Association. Selected this year from the northeast district is Kenny Ryan of Fond du Lac County; Heather Petersheim of Vernon County from the southwest district; Paul Lippert of Wood County from the northwest district; and Amber Elliot of Dane County from the southeast district. These members will serve a two-year term on the JAC committee, and join the second-year members JR Boyke, Linda Behling, Clayton Wohlk and Grady Wubbenhorst.

The 2007 Wisconsin Holstein Princess and Attendant were crowned at the convention. Shelly Bohn of Dodge County will serve as princess and Kristen Klossner of Green County will join her as the princess attendant.

Dozens of Junior Holstein members received awards during the convention. Following is a list of other highlights, see photos below.

* Out of 158 members who took the junior dairy bowl seating exam, Katie Wendorf, Vernon County, placed first; Ryan O'Leary, Fond du Lac County placed second and Krisin Solum, Polk County, placed third. Out of 85 members who took the senior dairy bowl seating exam, Danyel Hosto, Green County, placed first; Lynn Dickmann, Green County, placed second and Kenny Ryan, Fond du Lac County, placed third.

* All Wisconsin juniors at the convention had the chance to compete in the dairy jeopardy competition. The top competitor in each of three age brackets may compete at the national level. Qualifying this year in the junior division is Nicholas Schuster of Fond du Lac County; Jacob Brey of Door County won in the intermediate division; while Amber Elliot of Dane County is the senior division winner.

* In the speaking contest, Crystal Siemers-Peterman of Manitowoc County placed first in the junior division, while, Bethany Dado of Polk County placed second, and Jordan Siemers of Manitowoc County placed third. Michelle Gutenberger of Vernon County won the intermediate division, while Heather Petersheim of Vernon County was the winner in the senior division.

Twenty-eight junior members were awarded Long-Range production awards for cows that produced more than 100,000 pounds of milk in their lifetime.


Twenty-nine junior members were acknowledged as Junior Progressive Breeders for owning and breeding their milking animals producing 20,000 pounds of milk in a single lactation.
