Biofuel Border Battle

Biofuel Border Battle

Wisconsin and Minnesota stations offer Dueling E85 discounts on June 2.

As if Minnesota and Wisconsin needed another friendly rivalry, two fuel retailers on opposite sides of the St. Croix River are holding a rush-hour special on E85, the ethanol-based fuel that can be used in flex fuel vehicles.

The Freedom Valu Center at 1535 Beam Ave in Maplewood, MN and the River Hills BP at 101 Aspen Drive in Somerset, WI will both be selling E85 at a 85 cents per gallon discount from 4 to 6 p.m. on Thursday, June 2.

Drivers can save money when fueling with E85 while making a positive impact on the air we all breathe.  Summer is the beginning of Ozone season. Ozone, the main ingredient of smog, presents a serious air quality problem in many parts of Wisconsin.  Even at low levels, ozone can cause health effects and is especially harmful to those with asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, including chronic bronchitis and emphysema.

E85 is an official Clean Air Choice of the American Lung Association of the Upper Midwest.  A typical Flex Fuel Vehicle driver can prevent 4 tons of lifecycle CO2 and other pollutants from entering our air every year by fueling with E85 instead of gasoline.  Because E85 is made with up to 85% ethanol, it has many other added benefits, including reducing our dependence on foreign oil and supporting local economies.

The promotions are supported by the Minnesota Corn Growers Association, Wisconsin Corn Growers Association, Bob & Steve's BP Amoco Shops, Erickson Oil, American Lung Association of the Upper Midwest and MN & WI Clean Air Choice Teams.

*E85 is for flexible fuel vehicles  only. FFVs use E85 or gas interchangeably. Fuel lid door indicates E85 use.  There is a 30-gallon limit.
